My Family

My family is originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but we moved to Cary, North Carolina when I was about six months old. My little sister, Julie, is three and a half years younger than me and is a senior in high school. She is just starting the application process and is kind of freaking out about it. Yesterday she called to tell me she submitted her first one. For a while she wanted to go to Clemson but she's only taken two years of spanish and Clemson requires at least three years of a foreign language so my family and I are trying to convince her to take it this spring. She's really into art and wants to be an elementary school art teacher but we'll see how long that lasts (she changes her mind a lot) My dad does something really complicated and I'm not really sure what but he is definately a work-a-holic and a perfectionist but he goes by the motto "Work hard, play hard". He absolutely LOVES tailgating at Clemson and so he has my mom and my sister coming down here almost every single home game. My mom just went back to work when I was a senior in high school (so I guess it isn't just went back) but wants to find a new job. Our whole family is really close and I talk to almost all of them every day but especially my mom; we call each other constantly. Family is extremely important to me and I miss them terribly; the distance is the one thing I don't love about Clemson. Although I'm only four hours from home, it's still too far to make random trips home for dinner like some of my friends can who are from Spartanburg and Greenville. Basically my family is what holds me together.

cover letters

For this post I looked at a site that had a bunch of links that relate to cover letters with do's and don't and tips and all that. I looked at two of the links and wrote responses to them both.

1. The Worst Use of the Cover Letter- this page discussed when it was and wasn't appropriate to use a cover letter. The page states that cover letters should not be used when sending out your resume to a ton of potential employers but I didn't really understand it. If used properly, why couldn't you use it when sending out your resume to lots of employers? As long as you write the address properly and lay out the letter correctly, I don't understand why it shouldn't be sent out to mulitple people.

2. Cover Letter Checklist- I really like this page because it listed everything you need to do and remember when writing a cover letter. I love checklists like this because they ensure that nothing is left out.

Interview Tip Articles

How to Deal with Interview Stress- This article helps gives tips on how to stay calm during job interviews. I read it expecting to learn some more tips, but it is mostly just common knowledge. Even doing these exercises, I am still nervous talking in interviews and selling myself in order to get a job. However, my public speaking course taught me that the majority of the time others can't tell your nervous as most nervous traits aren't visible (fast heartbeat, sweaty palms, etc.)

It's your turn: What to Ask an Interviewer- This article really is helpful. Whenever I'm in an interview situation I never have any idea what to ask, I usually freeze up. Simple interview situations like talking to an adviser or babysitting, I can't think of any questions at the time but like ten minutes later, I'm full of questions. This article helps out by giving you sample questions to ask to different people in the company.

10 years from now...

I know this is sounds so predictable but in ten years time I want to be married and have had a least one child. I want to be living in or near Charleston, South Carolina and be settled. By settled I mean house, stable job, etc. I'm not sure right now what I want to do for work so I have no idea what my job will be in ten years but hopefully something I love and enjoy doing. I don't want to be trapped in a job I hate because I need the money. Life is too short to be miserable in what you do. If I am in a job I don't like, I hope that by then I will have the guts to look for a job that might not be as well paying but at least something I enjoy. Originally I wanted to be a doctor or a nurse so maybe by the time I'm thirty I can go back to nursing school and get that degree. Honestly I have no idea what I want to be by the time I'm thirty but I do know that I want to be happy and healthy.
